Starting out on this journey, it was a struggle to get stores to stock the ‘unknown’ chia seed but with a lot of education, dedication and hard work, the team did it! Fast forward 10 years and Chia Bia can be found on shelves in over 2000 stores worldwide_ Ireland, UK, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Germany, Pakistan, Malta and Bosnia & Herzegovina! We couldn’t be prouder that all these products are produced in our facility in Tramore, a seaside town in the sunny South East of Ireland! Of course, the product range has evolved as did the brand, you’ll see from the pictures that some of them are no longer with us. As we were the first company to bring chia seeds to Europe and some of our products were too ‘new’ for a market who knew nothing about chia seed. We continue to work on NPD (new product development) and look forward to launching new products soon. Can you remember any of these?
Chia Seed Experts
We are a chia centric business meaning everything we do revolves around this super seed! Over the years Barrie has visited the chia growers in South America and distilled his knowledge of chia to the team. Quality is at the forefront of our business, by maintaining those important relationships with the farmers it ensures full traceability from harvest to plate. We always strive to educate customers, retailers, the food service industry and anybody who will listen on the benefits and versatility of chia seed. If you are reading this and don’t know… chia seed is naturally high in Omega 3 (good for heart health), high in fibre (aids digestion) and a source of protein (helps muscle growth and repair). Chia is allergen free and can be eaten raw, cooked, baked or frozen! It’s subtle taste means it can be easily added to foods/drinks to boost nutrition without affecting the flavour. Chia also has other properties that makes it so resourceful. It can absorb up to 10 times it’s weight in liquid so works as an egg replacer in recipes, milled chia can be used as a part flour substitute in baking and it can be effortlessly disguised in children’s/picky eater’s meals.
Giving something back
A huge part of the Chia Bia ethos is to give back to our local community. We have supported over the last 10 years. There are far too many teams, clubs, organisations, charities and individuals to list but some of our long term partnerships include Tramore Camogie and Tramore Surf Lifesaving Club. More recent activity includes supporting local Elite Irish Athlete Kieran Jackson and Ironman Emmet Kelly, hosting the Copper Coast Market, sponsoring The Shona Project SHINE event and raising funds for Hospice Ireland, The Irish Heart Foundation and Focus Ireland. We are very lucky to work with some incredibly talented individuals and we truly believe in the importance of their goals.
The success of Chia Bia is testament to the hard work and dedication of the team past and present. Of course we wouldn’t be here 10 years later without the continued support of all our customers so we would like to thank EVERY SINGLE PERSON who has every bought a Chia Bia product, chatted to the team at events, followed us on social media or gave us feedback (good or bad!). We wouldn’t be here without you! Here’s to the next 10!
